Fire walls are one of the types of fire protection barriers that ensure fire safety both at the initial stage of construction and in the subsequent stages of construction of buildings. These walls are used in construction to improve fire safety.
In addition to fire walls, there are other obstacles, such as fire hatches or steel fire doors. All of them are designed to prevent fire in the event of a fire from spreading quickly inside the building between floors and rooms, thus ensuring fire safety in the building.
Fire safety at the initial stage of construction
The regulations permit the use of wood in fire doors and hatches that is protected by non-combustible materials on all sides or otherwise treated with fire protection. To ensure fire safety at the initial stage of construction, a type 1 fire bailout is often used, but such a wall should include fire gates, doors and windows of the 1st and 2nd types of protection. In addition, the fire safety laws of America require that fire walls must be supported by foundation beams or foundations, erected at full height of the building and cross all building structures and floors.
In addition, for fire safety it is allowed to install fire walls directly on the frame structures of the building, provided that they are made of fire-resistant, non-combustible materials. The main requirement of the Department of Fire Safety of America is that the fire resistance limit of the frame with filling elements and fastening units complies with the established normative fire resistance values for the respective type of fire walls.
When a building is divided into fire compartments, a wider and taller fire compartment wall must be installed. Outside the fire wall, windows and doors may be installed that do not have a standardized fire resistance limit. The windows may be installed above the roof of the adjoining compartment at a distance of at least 8 meters vertically and at least 4 meters horizontally.
It is also permitted to install smoke and ventilation ducts in fire walls. It is only necessary to observe the following condition: the fire resistance limit in the place of their placement inside the fire wall must be at least 2.5 hours.
If all fire safety standards are met during the initial construction phase, the fire safety and protection of the facility will be in line with the standards and the building will be considered safe for operation.
